Whether you are a football fanatic, or merely show up to the tailgate party for the social aspect, you can probably agree that the game time snacks are just as important as the game itself. For some of us, it is more important 😉 Game time munchies are notoriously high in calories, and loaded with added sugars and saturated fat. Here are some healthier snack options that are delicious and won’t leave you in a post-game food coma.
Pistachios. Pistachios in the shell are the perfect snacking nut for a couple of reasons. The act of removing the nut from the shell slows down eating, which may lead to increased satisfaction and fullness. Pistachios are also the lowest calorie nut, but they are packed full of nutrients like potassium and fiber. Not to mention that they taste great too!
Guacamole. Yes, you can serve your guac with chips, but how about also adding fresh cut veggies to the mix? You will enjoy the benefits of the healthy fats in the avocado and also get a nice does of fiber. Did you know that avocados are one of the highest fiber fruits?
Spiced nuts. Hello fall flavors! Nothing says fall like football and spiced nuts! Spiced nuts are incredibly easy to make and they fill your house with a lovely aroma.
Fajitas. Although not technically a snack. Fajitas are great to make on an outdoor or indoor grill. Be sure to include lots of veggies with your fajitas, like black beans, peppers, onions, and fresh salsa!
Air popped chips/crackers. If you are really craving chips, try wheat thins air popped. They come in all of your favorite varieties like BBQ or sour cream ‘n onion. Wheat thins popped are whole grain and sans trans fat. As always, with any type of snack, you need to stick with just one serving!
What are some of your favorite healthier tailgating snacks? Oh yea, Go Saints!!
