About Joanna
I am a registered licensed dietitian and have worked in clinical dietetics for ten years. Over the course of my career I have discovered that I have a passion for teaching and educating. My first experiences in teaching involved nutrition lectures for certified nursing assistant classes and student nurses. I have since worked as a seminar presenter for a national company that provides continuing education for health care professionals and have conducted nutrition wellness seminars for the employees of various businesses where I live. One of my favorite consulting jobs was providing nutrition counseling for health club members at Gold’s Gym. I also serve as adjunct faculty in the Food Science and Human Nutrition department at the University of Maine.
Education
From a fairly young age, I had an interest in science; in particular how the human body works. I graduated from the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology. After taking an elective nutrition class, I decided I wanted to become a dietitian. I continued with my education at the University of Maine and received a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Foods and a Master of Science in Food Science and Human Nutrition. I decided to pursue a Ph.D., and I am now a Doctoral Candidate in Food and Nutrition Sciences. My clinical research involves vitamin D supplementation in patients that have had gastric bypass surgery.
Twenty years ago someone told me that “girls can’t lift weights,” so I asked my brother to teach me and have been weight training ever since. I believe exercise is the fountain of youth. I also find that it makes it easier to carry my shopping bags and my twenty pound cat. I am certified by the American Council on Exercise as a group fitness instructor and a personal trainer.
Philosophy
I believe that knowledge is the catalyst for change. My goal is to provide clients with sound fundamental nutrition information based on science and research. I offer clients a no-nonsense practical approach to achieving permanent changes in their dietary practices to meet their individual needs.
Fun Facts About Me

- I was born in Pennsylvania and I am a die hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan
- My favorite dessert is Whoopie Pies (especially pumpkin chocolate chip)
- I went to Australia last fall with my husband and snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef and climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge
