5 Fruits and Vegetables a Day- It’s worth it!
Did you know?
Diets high in vegetables and fruit protect us against certain kinds of cancer. Estimates
from a multi-study report show that if the only change people made was to include
5 fruits and vegetables in their daily diet, overall cancer rates would decline by 20%. Further estimates included:
- 1 in every 3 cases of lung cancer could be prevented
- 3 in every 4 cases of colon and rectal cancer could be prevented, and
- 1/2 of all breast cancer could be prevented
Serving Sizes
One serving of fruit = 1/2 cup, or 1 small piece of fruit such as an apple or orange.
One serving of vegetable = 1/2 cup cooked and whole cup raw
Tips on adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet- It’s Easy!
- Add berries, raisins, sliced bananas, or sliced apples to cereal
- Add shredded carrots, sliced bell peppers, and tomatoes to salads
- Enjoy tomato or vegetable soup as part of your lunch or dinner
- Cook green beans in stewed tomatoes for two veggies in one dish
