About Amy
“Mommy I want to go on a diet” said my 7 year old little MacKenzie. I never knew a sentence could affect me the way it did. This is when I realized that these words had causally left my lips on many occasion while conversing with my best friend. I knew that there are many milestones in a child’s life that I would have to explain (boogie monsters, cussing, boys, sex, etc) but I had no clue how to address this one.
At that time I was going back to college after years of taking a break. It was becoming increasingly evident that my Biology degree that I worked so hard for was not going to find me the career of my dreams. The 1st semester back I took a nutrition class. Being the proud mother that I was, I wanted to give my child sound advice and maybe lose a couple pounds in the process.
Even though this was a Nutrition 101 class, and the jocks in the back did everything to distract the teacher, I fell in love with the class. I didn’t realize that nutrition had so much to do with biology (yet so practical). This is how I found my direction to be a Dietitian.
In my journeys, I have focused on healthy weight control and diabetes management with children and adults. Currently I am a Clinical Nutrition Manager at the community hospital in Western Maryland. This is an area where 75% of the people are overweight and over half of those people are obese. The diabetes rate in my county is the highest in the nation. I have taught my dietitians how to focus on teaching our patients short and long term goals for weight loss and blood sugar control. Small steps are the key.
Knowledge is not always power! When people ask for advice, they already know I’m about to say. The key to weight loss is being ready to change and to have consistent counseling and support. This is why Real Living Nutrition is so unique, you are able to receive the support most people need and do it with your schedule.
So you want to know what happen to that innocent little 7 year old, she is now 15! She has a healthy outlook on nutrition and physical activity and a great body image. She has learned how to eat in moderation and understands that “all foods fit”. To this day she has never gone on a diet. I now get to do this again, with my two new daughters. This time I’ll know how to answer that question.
