About Shelley
I have over ten years of experience as a Registered Dietitian, working with everyone from newborn babies to octogenarians. I am also a Board Certified Family Physician and have experience as a Certified Personal Trainer/Fitness Instructor.
I started my career in nutrition with a Bachelors degree in nutrition from the University of Florida, and then went on to get a Masters degree in nutrition from Georgia State University. After finishing my Masters, I worked in both the hospital and outpatient settings, with a variety of clients and a variety of nutrition related needs. I then went on to become a Certified Personal Trainer and fitness leader, which allowed me to help clients with both their nutrition and fitness goals. After four years I decided I enjoyed helping people with their health so much that I would go back to school and become a physician. I am now a Family Physician working in a community health center. It has been a long road but I truly feel I have found my calling by combining both of these vital and vibrant careers.
I have experience working in the areas of wellness, sports nutrition and preventive care, as well as the management of chronic conditions like diabetes, coronary artery disease and hypertension. I particularly enjoy working with weight management and fitness counseling.
I believe in a holistic approach to health, focusing on the maintenance of an appropriate balance between body, mind and spirit. That’s why I love the Real Living Nutrition approach. The programs allow you to set achievable goals that are not only about diet, but about energy, vitality, mindfulness and positive lifestyle change. Since everyone is different, learning and changing at their own pace and having individual needs and lives, I believe in a personalized approach to lifestyle change and in gradual change to ensure lasting results.
I look forward to helping you achieve your goals!
Fun Facts About Me
- I love hiking, walking, snow boarding and yoga
- I am vegetarian (by choice) and follow a gluten-free diet (not by choice but I feel a lot better this way), so I understand what it’s like to have special dietary needs
- I am an animal lover, and couldn’t decide whether to go to medical school or vet school, but ultimately decided my nutrition background would serve me better with humans (have you ever tried to teach a dog how to make healthier food choices?)
- I don’t enjoy “working out” but I do love being outside (i.e.- exercise can be fun if you hide it in a pretty package)
- I was born and raised in Florida, but have lived in 7 states total. I now live in Nashville, TN.
