About Melissa
Welcome! Have you tried just about every fad diet imaginable, but find you gain all or most of the weight back once you come off the diet? Do you struggle with uncontrollable cravings for sweets and fats, or eating due to emotions or stress? Are you fed up with yo-yo dieting and ready to learn simple strategies to achieve and maintain a healthy weight for the long-term?
Then, I would love to help guide you through this process. You can do it! Many clients in my private practice have struggled with the issues mentioned above, and as I have done with them, I am eager to help you discover the areas holding you back from lasting weight loss and provide practical strategies using a non-diet approach to help you achieve your health and weight loss goals.
My approach
I am passionate about guiding others to develop a healthy relationship with food. I believe in providing a comforting, non-judgmental environment for clients to learn and make positive changes. I understand that weight issues are not always just about food. Stress, emotions, and boredom often are associated with overeating. Processes such as off and on dieting can lead to eventual, increased weight gain (even though you may have lost some weight while on the diet). As your personal dietitian, I hope to empower you to move away from dieting and achieve a natural and healthy weight.
Being a busy professional and a wife, I understand that healthy eating also needs to be practical, convenient, and tasty! I will help you use the tools in the balance program to provide the nutrition you need in a way that makes sense for you. As your personal coach, I will help point out areas in your diet and lifestyle that can hold you back from weight loss and provide strategies, support and encouragement to overcome these barriers. I approach each client as a unique individual and develop a plan that is personalized with your needs and goals in mind.
My specialty areas
As you may have already noticed, my primary interest and focus is with weight management, however, I also have a passion and experience in helping people with nutrition therapy during and after Cancer, for blood sugar and cholesterol management, and for general healthy eating for lifetime wellness. I truly believe in the power of food to bring health and wellness to each unique individual.
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, University of Texas at Arlington, 1992
Master of Science in Nutrition, Bastyr University, Kenmore, Washington, 2005
Dietetic Internship, University of Washington, 2006
My formal nutrition education began at Bastyr University, a leader in Naturopathic Education, which emphasizes holistic health principals and a whole foods approach to nutrition therapy. It was here that I gained a passion for nutrition counseling using a non-diet approach, focusing on behavior modification.
My natural health education from Bastyr was complemented with training in conventional nutrition during my dietetic program at the University of Washington. This balance of training in Eastern and Western health philosophies has proven especially useful. While I have the same training and knowledge of conventionally trained nutritionists, I have been able to further help clients looking for a more natural approach to health and wellness.
I currently work as a Dietitian at Cedar Springs Austin, an Eating Disorders Treatment Center in Austin TX. I have been in private practice since 2006.
