About Kelly
Hello and Welcome to Real Living Nutrition! I am excited to be a member of such a winning team of Registered Dietitians who are the “Real” nutrition experts in the vast field of nutrition. My goal is to empower people (YOU) to make healthy lifestyle changes that will enable them to meet their own personal nutrition goals.
I first became interested in nutrition during high school. As an athlete, proper nutrition was a key to performance. I experienced first hand the result of not eating healthy as well as disordered eating. Thankfully, I discovered “Balance” through learning more about the science of nutrition and the physiology of our body and how it works. My father always had a huge organic garden and enjoys cooking so I have also learned from him. It is now a passion of mine to help others discover that food can be fun, as well as teach people how to eat healthy when living with chronic diseases. An example is that I grew up observing my grandmother, a homemaker, taking pride and satisfaction in serving healthy, well balanced meals. I’m convinced that my grandpa lived without complications from Diabetes for 40 plus years because of her dedication to nutritious meal planning.
I graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics in 1999. I am a registered, licensed dietitian and have worked in a variety of settings from hospitals to nursing home care centers and have taught nutrition classes at community colleges. I am a member of the American Dietetic Association, Minnesota Dietetic Association, and the North West District Dietetic Association, where I have served as the President and in several other positions. I also was awarded the Recognized Young Dietitian for Wyoming in 2005.
In addition, I have been doing nutrition counseling and coaching with various corporations as part of their work-site wellness programs. I personally believe that without true “Balance” in one’s life, it is very difficult to take care of yourself. It is too easy in our fast paced world, to get in the everyday rut and routine and soon you may be facing real life health conditions. My goal is to help you find that balance with eating as well as in other areas of your life and to realize that food can be your friend and be fun!
Fun Facts About Me
- I have three sons, so including my husband, I am very outnumbered in our household. My only female companions include 2 Labrador retrievers.
- I ran one marathon (was on my bucket list) after college, and after finishing I have discovered I enjoy a little less strenuous exercise, which also fits better into my current day to day life. However, I feel so much better (mentally and physically) when I can exercise regularly regardless of what kind it is.
- I enjoy traveling and spent 6 months in Europe on an exchange program in college. I LOVED the food, culture, and slower pace of life. I try and practice this daily by sitting down and eating meals as a family.
- A perfect way to start my day is breakfast and a cup of coffee, but it isn’t complete without French vanilla creamer :-).
- Some of my favorite foods are salmon, Portobello mushrooms, fresh picked produce, and almost anything chocolate but if it’s mixed with peanut butter I’m in heaven :-).
- My favorite seasons in Minnesota are late summer and fall when we have a wonderful variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to choose from. I only wish Fall would last longer so our winters would be shorter!
