About Joey
My passion is coaching others into achieving a healthy lifestyle. Since becoming a Registered Dietitian in 1996, I have had the pleasure of working with a multitude of clients with a variety of nutritional concerns and goals. I have always enjoyed witnessing the excitement of my clients when the “hard work pays off” and they achieve positive outcomes such as lowering their cholesterol level or fitting into a smaller pant size.
Being a dancer since childhood and working at an athletic club through high school and college, I have been around fitness all of my life. When I wasn’t in dance classes, I was very active with aerobics, swimming, weight training, and racquet ball. I began college as a dance major, however, after taking a nutrition class my second year I decided to switch my major. My new found love for nutrition was a perfect compliment to my already deep interest in fitness.
In 1995, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition/Dietetics from East Carolina University which is where I also completed my American Dietetic Association approved Dietetic Internship Program.
Although my career began as a hospital clinical dietitian, most of my 10 plus years of experience has been in the outpatient setting specializing in individual and group nutritional counseling in areas such as weight management, diabetes, heart disease, pulmonary disease, wellness, and gastrointestinal disorders. I have been responsible for the nutrition component of Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehab Programs in both North Carolina and South Carolina where I developed nutrition programs such as a 10-week weight management program. In addition to nutritional counseling, I have planned and presented numerous community nutrition education programs. These programs included radio segments and presentations for Coastal Area Health Education Center and to charitable organizations, businesses, and a variety of groups including senior, church, and support groups on a variety of topics such as heart disease, wellness, sports nutrition, and general nutrition. In South Carolina, my role as Outpatient Clinical Dietitian allowed me the opportunity to provide nutritional counseling to pediatric, adult, and elderly populations with a variety of nutritional concerns.
I have recently branched off into private practice working with clients who are interested in learning more about healthy nutrition/wellness, sports nutrition, and weight management. I also present nutrition education programs to businesses and groups including local dance studios. I am currently a member of the American Dietetic Association, Nutrition Entrepreneurs Dietetic Practice Group, and the South Carolina Dietetic Association.
I believe that if we learn to have a positive mindset about nutrition and fitness that we can develop healthy habits that can lead to overall wellness (aka developing “Healthy Habitudes”). I also believe that restrictive diets don’t work and that all foods can fit into a balanced eating plan. I look forward to assisting you on your journey to achieving “Healthy Habitudes.”
