Mint: Lots of Flavor with Surprising Health Benefits
by Meri Raffetto RD, LDN
Mint...the fresh scent and flavor is unbeatable. While you may think that mint is just an herb added to some cocktails or the flavor of your favorite ice-cream, it actually has many health benefits. Mint is an ancient herb that has been used for it's medicinal and aromatic properties for years and mint's powerful smell has made it a popular perfume throughout history. The ancient Greeks rubbed mint leaves on dining tables to welcome guests. Hmmm...I would give it a try. It definitely would smell great! I wonder what Martha Stewart would think?
Besides the wonderful scent and fresh flavor, mint also provides some powerful nutrients. Studies have shown that mint helps relieve symptoms from indigestion or other stomach problems, acts as a potential ant-cancer agent, and helps to reduce inflammation. It is also a good source of vitamin C and vitamin A. Who knew that this little herb could pack such a powerful health punch.
Let's get clear that these benefits will only be found with using the fresh herb and is likely not going to be found in mint flavored items such as mint ice-cream or a york peppermint patty.
To store fresh mint leaves, carefully wrap them in a damp paper towel and place inside of a loosely closed plastic bag. Store in the refrigerator, where it should keep fresh for several days. Dried mint should be kept in a tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dark and dry place, where it will keep fresh for about nine to twelve months.
