Friendly Fats can Help you Lose Weight

by Meri Raffetto RD, LDN

Fats have been considered taboo in the dieting world of the past. A moderate fat diet (around 30% of calories) can actually help you with your weight loss efforts. Why? Dietary fats make you feel full for a longer period of time helping you to eat fewer calories during the day. The goal is to choose heart healthy, or friendly fats so you also stay healthy while losing weight. Here are a few friendly fats with their appropriate portion sizes. Keep in mind that although fats can be helpful for weight loss, they still carry 9 calories per gram so make sure you use appropriate portion sizes.

Friendly Fats                             Portion Size

Olive oil                                      1 teaspoon

Canola oil                                   1 teaspoon

Vinaigrette salad dressings        1 tbsp

Nuts                                           12 -15

avocado                                     1/8th of the avocado

Adding friendly fats to your diet is a great way to stay healthy, keep yourself feeling full, and reach your weight loss goals.
