Add Some Beans For Your Health!

by Meri Raffetto RD, LDN

Want to add a significant health punch to your diet? Add some beans! No matter what kind you like, beans are great for you in any form. Researchers have shown that beans contain a rich source of anthocyanins, an antioxidant with possible anticancer properties. The darker the bean, the more antioxidants it may have according to Clifford W. Beninger, lead author of the study at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. A matter of fact, only a half-cup of black beans has the same amount of this powerful antioxidant as two glasses of red wine.

It doesn’t stop here! Beans are also one of the best sources of folate, a B-vitamin that has been shown to decrease the risk of neural tube defects during pregnancy, heart disease, cancer, and even depression. They are also a rich source of fiber which helps to decrease cholesterol levels and regulate blood sugar. Lastly, it is an excellent source of protein without all the saturated fat.

You can’t go wrong adding beans to your diet! Whether you enjoy a cup of chili, sprinkle some kidney beans on your salad or have some baked chips with bean dip you will be adding a powerful punch to your health! See our recipe of the month to get our fantastic Spring Bean Ragout recipe.
